Each of us is the sum of our experiences in life. The secret is discovering how those experiences interrelate. I offer professional counselling in the areas described below.
Trauma is a person’s emotional response to a distressing experience. Few people can go through life without encountering some kind of trauma. Unlike ordinary hardships, traumatic events tend to be sudden and unpredictable, involve a serious threat to life, such as bodily injury or death, and feel beyond a person’s control. Most important, events are traumatic to the degree that they undermine a person's sense of safety in the world and create an underlying fear that catastrophe could strike at any time.
Disability is any condition that makes it more difficult for a person to do certain activities or effectively interact with the world around them. These conditions or impairments may be cognitive, developmental, intellectual, mental, physical, sensory, or a combination of multiple factors. Impairments causing disability may be present from birth or can be acquired during a person's lifetime. Historically, disabilities have been viewed as fitting a narrow set of conditions-- however, disabilities are not binary and can be present unique characteristics depending on the individual. Often, disabled people are "unnecessarily isolated and excluded from full participation in society.
Addiction is the need for a substance or behaviour that feels out of control. It is a habit that involves the building up tolerance, often experienced as always needing more to feel satisfied. Addiction affects both the brain and the body, seriously disrupting people's efforts to live a satisfying life. Addiction is a subjective illness that may affect each of us in different ways.
The first step in therapy is talking. Let's find a time where we can meet and talk about what's on your mind.
